Insider Travel Tips

🦁

Best Safari Timing

Visit Kruger between May and September (dry season) for thinning vegetation and animals congregating at waterholes — dramatically improving sightings.

🏔

Cape Town Weather

Cape Town's best weather runs November to March (austral summer). Table Mountain's famous tablecloth cloud can obscure views — check forecasts before booking the cable car.

🚗

Self-Drive in Kruger

Self-driving in Kruger is a fantastic and affordable option. Stick to tar roads in a sedan, observe all speed limits, and never exit the vehicle outside of designated rest camps.

💊

Health Precautions

The Kruger region is malaria-endemic. Consult your doctor about antimalarial medication and bring strong insect repellent. Cape Town and the Winelands are malaria-free.

When to Visit

South Africa's climate varies enormously by region. Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers (Nov–Mar) and cool wet winters (Jun–Aug). The Kruger and Lowveld regions are subtropical — hot year-round with a wet summer season (Nov–Apr). The dry season (May–Sep) is ideal for game viewing.

May–July (Safari Season)

Dry and cool in Kruger — excellent game viewing as animals gather at water. Cape Town can be rainy and windy but the Winelands are beautiful.

Aug–Oct (Spring)

Warming up across the country. Wildflowers bloom spectacularly on the West Coast. Whale season peaks at Hermanus. Excellent shoulder season.

Nov–Jan (Summer)

Hot and humid in Kruger with afternoon thunderstorms. Cape Town is at its sunniest best. Festive season brings crowds and higher prices.

Feb–Apr (Late Summer)

Still warm and lush. Fewer crowds in Cape Town after the school holidays. The Drakensberg is beautiful with green slopes and dramatic skies.
