Hilton Head Island is America's most refined beach destination — a barrier island off the South Carolina coast where 12 miles of pristine Atlantic beaches meet award-winning golf courses, world-class tennis, and a sophisticated food and wine scene. With no flashing neon signs, height restrictions on buildings, and trees preserved around every road, Hilton Head is deliberately, beautifully understated.

Insider Travel Tips
Bring or Rent Bikes
Hilton Head's bike path network is extraordinary. Renting bikes for your stay ($20–$30/day per bike) is the best way to experience the island. Many resorts include bikes.
Avoid Summer Heat
June–August is hot (90°F+) and humid with peak crowds and high accommodation rates. March–May and September–October are far more pleasant.
Book Golf in Advance
Harbour Town Links tee times book out weeks ahead, especially during RBC Heritage week in April. Call the pro shop directly for the best availability.
Lowcountry Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are aggressive in the marshes, especially May–October at dawn and dusk. Use DEET repellent and wear long sleeves near the water. Sea breezes on the beach keep them manageable.
When to Visit
Spring (Mar–May)
Ideal temperatures 65–80°F. Beach walks, golf, cycling. RBC Heritage golf tournament in April.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Hot, humid, peak crowds. Beach season. Families flock to the island.
Fall (Sep–Oct)
Second-best season. Warm sea, fewer crowds. Birding migration season in October.
Winter (Nov–Feb)
Mild 50–65°F. Very quiet. Low prices. Golf remains playable year-round.
